TEDx at Phnom Penh

This short post is just to draw your attention to TED, if you haven’t already heard of it.  Check it out at

It’s public education on the web, with what TED describes as ‘riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world.’   The event in Phnom Penh has been in the planning phase for quite a while and there are a number of our VSO volunteers who are real ‘teddies’ and signed up.  It sounds like it was an inspiring event, but also one that encouraged people to action. Kath told me that at one of the discussion sessions, people round her table decided that they wanted to take away a task which would improve Cambodia in some way, so by sharing and talking they realised they could pool their skills to translate an important book into Khmer.  Kath’s suggestion – of a standard midwifery text book – won out.  Watch this space!  Alternatively, link into Sam’s blog to get a really interesting account of the day ( http://www.ourvso.com).

  1. Just had a look at this and clicked on ‘Nigel Marsh: How to make work-life balance work’.
Despite being a bit scary he had some good things to say so instead of working on a paper I need to write, I spent some time in the garden tidying up the mess left by winter storms and I now feel a lot better than I did this morning.
Had a look at Sam’s blog – sounds like a good day.
Will look at some of the other talks later.

  2. Thank you and all there for introducing me to TED… I’d never heard of it. It’s wonderful to find that the web can be about so much more than videos of animals with funny voices, valuable as they are. I shall use it a lot, I hope.

A midwifery text for Cambodia? What a wonderful, simple, powerful idea – good luck with that.

    Hope you’re OK, too!
