I am back in the land of the living after wiping out a couple of weeks to finish a big piece of education writing. i can now resume my reading of the Martin Beck series. Matthew gave me these 10 books as my birthday present last year. It took him a long time to source all ten in the special edition pictured here.. nice.
That was last November. A couple of weeks ago, I finished number 4, ‘The Laughing Policeman’. The writing is spare, even thin, but as book follows book, the people and the setting grow more and more real – I’m thinking of the series as a symphony, rather than of each book as a song in its own right. Book 5 will sit on the shelf a bit longer.. but I’ enjoying the anticipation.
These stories, set in 1960s Stockholm, make clear that Sweden was the crime centre of Europe, long before people started having dragons tatooed on their arms.
